You may have noticed that plaster has played a very important role in civil construction, right? Especially when it comes to wall and ceiling cladding! The use of putty has been replaced by smooth plaster, both for the finish itself and for the many advantages that plaster offers! With that in mind, we created this article for you to finally understand how to put plaster on the wall!
But what are those perks What does smooth plaster offer when used as a cladding for masonry walls? The use of smooth plaster has been widely used because it offers a much lower cost than running dough and quick execution. In addition, it is much easier to achieve a better finish with smooth plaster than with the use of putty, providing walls without ripples or Trincas, which can be painted directly on this material.
If you decide to use plain plaster to cover the walls and ceilings of your works, know that you made a great choice and, following our step by step on how to apply it, I guarantee that you will have an impeccable final finish! So come with me and read on to learn once and for all how to apply plaster to the wall and guarantee an incredible result!
Before you start applying the plaster to the surfaces, you need to make sure that all these points are ready:
The surface must be even and level, and there must be no burrs or any irregularities;
The walls that will receive the application of smooth plaster must be free of moisture and infiltrations;
The electrical part, at least the guide wire, must be installed;
The hydraulic part must also have been installed and tested, both the cold and hot water systems and the sewage systems;
The air conditioning infrastructure must be installed;
The stops must be attached to the brickwork.
After making sure that the entire structure above is complete, it's time to prepare the surface.
2) Surface preparation:
Every surface that will receive the smooth plaster must be prepared according to its type of material. We will explain how the procedure for preparing masonry wall surfaces, which are the most common, should be. Most often, the application of smooth plaster is done on top of the layer of plastering, providing an even better finish.
Masonry walls, because they are made of blocks, may have surfaces that are not as regular, requiring a greater amount of plaster to be applied. The better the quality of the wall, the smaller the thickness of the plaster can be and the faster the application.
Therefore, in this type of wall, it is important to smooth the surface as much as possible, eliminating holes, loose masses, burrs, and wait at least 28 days from the installation of the wall blocks so that the laying mortar fully heals and the moisture in the mortar runs out, so that the smooth plaster does not get stained. After the mortar has cured, it is possible to apply the plaster on the wall.
After the entire process of leveling and smoothing the surface and, after waiting for the ideal period for curing the mortar, the surface must be well cleaned. Then it is necessary to remove dirt, dust, sand and remnants of loose mass so that the plaster, when applied, has good adhesion to the substrate.
But what if we talk about walls that are not brickwork? When we talk about other types of walls, such as those of concrete precast or molded in place, the particularities of each of them must be considered in the concreting process for subsequent application of the smooth plaster. Generally, you have to wait 28 days after concreting before you can apply the plaster as a coating.

3) Gypsum mix:
Now that you have a surface ready to receive the plaster, you need to mix the plaster with the water to obtain a paste that can be applied to the walls. But what is the ideal proportion of water and plaster that should be mixed?
Well, generally, for a bag of gypsum dust (40 kg), 36 to 40 liters of water are needed and the dilution process must be carried out following the steps:
Fill the dough with water and sprinkle the powder until it fills the dough evenly;
Let the mass stand for 8 to 10 minutes until the powder dissolves;
Mix part of the dough and leave the rest to rest in the dough;
Allow the mixture to stand for a while longer to induce the paste;
Observe the consistency of the paste and, if it is homogeneous and without lumps, the plaster is ready to be used.
With the plaster ready to be applied, you need to take care that it does not harden before application. If it hardens, it needs to be discarded. To avoid waste of plaster due to early hardening, it is recommended to use a gypsum retarder.
With that in mind, Blok developed BlokGesso Lento, which slows down the hardening of plaster, reducing the waste of cured plaster mortar and increasing finishing and smoothing time during application. Thus, Blok Slow Plaster promotes cost reduction and does not alter the strength and characteristics of the plaster!
4) Surface application
With the surface prepared and the plaster ready to be applied, it is possible that the smooth plaster can be applied to the walls! And what's the right way to do this? Keep reading, and I'll explain it to you!
The first thing you should pay attention to is to start applying it from top to bottom, when it is done on walls, and protect the floor with canvas, since the plaster generates a lot of waste, such as remains and splashes of putty. It is also recommended to consider using corners and corners to protect doors, doors, and floors well!
If the final finish requires great flatness and squaring or the walls are misaligned, you should make taliscas and masters, however, if they are well groomed, it is not necessary.
Basically, the application is made with the use of top-down performers. Just be careful that the finish is as expected, very smooth and without ripples, right?
5) Finalization
Now that you have applied the plaster to the wall, what precautions should be taken after applying it? Come on, there! I'll tell you!
Well, first, you need to do a general analysis to verify that the service is well done. To do this, observe the visual appearance of the walls, if they are without ripples and burrs, that is, quite smooth. A tip is to illuminate the area with focused lights, parallel to the surface: they show any irregularities in the finish.
Then, pay attention to the corners: they must have a good visual appearance and regularity. Probably, the plasterer will have to frame the electrical boxes as well as other points, as they may have gone unnoticed during the application of the plaster and become covered.
After all these steps, cleaning is essential for any service done well. For this reason, cleaning the entire area immediately after the end of the service is important since working with plaster generates a lot of residue and putty splashes everywhere. In addition, all waste must be disposed of in a suitable and specific place for this purpose, since gypsum cannot be disposed of in ordinary waste. Therefore, separate the plaster from the other materials so that it can be given an appropriate destination. _________________________________________________________________
